Some of the smaller Catan sets on display

I am sorting out my Catan collection getting ready to move to a larger display space and I had these sets together.

They include some of the smallest Catan games and even a couple of disposable versions!!

The games shown are:

  1. De Kolonisten van Catan: Wegwerpcatan - 999 Games 2007 (Dutch) Quite likely the smallest version of Catan ever released, this promotional set uses very simple rules and does not use any cards. On BGG they make the point that this game is made out of paper and can only be used a few times. Personally the game is so stripped of entertainment value I would be surprised if anyone played this set more than once. Play is to 7 points and the set comes with a paper spinner to replace the dice.

  2. Die Siedler von Catan: Das Mini-Spiel - Kosmos 2010 (German) This small promotional set is for 3 players and the rules are modified to be the same basic version of Catan as the game above. It has no cards and even starting positions are fixed.

  3. Catan: Traveler Compact Edition - Mayfair 2015 (English) The game is still available. I checked with the official Catan shop last week and they still stock the old Mayfair version. However there is now a 2022 version with the Catan Studio logo on. I need to get one of these for my collection now. This traveler set is available in 11 languages but I will only have the English and German versions as the set does not interest me enough to be part of my International series.

  4. De Kolonisten van Catan: Mini-Editie - 999 Games 2007 (Dutch) As far as I am aware this was the first Travel Edition released in the Netherlands and was later replaced by the Dutch Traveler version in 2015.

  5. 05A Catan aluminium briefcase - red - Capcom 2010 (Japanese)
05B Catan aluminium briefcase - black - Capcom 2010 (Japanese)
There are also other versions of this briefcase featuring different artwork and text. I have not tried to collect all of the varieties as I am happy with a couple of examples.

  6. Die Siedler von Catan: Travel Box - Kosmos 2002 (German) The earliest of the plastic small boards in my collection.

  7. Catan: Portable Edition - Mayfair 2008 (English) The small plastic board works really well and this is a great game for a confined playing area like a train or tent. However I am not a fan of the numbers being fixed. It is great that the hexes can change though

  8. The Settlers of Catan: Travel Edition - Mayfair 2003 (English) An unusual feature of both this set and the 2008 Portable Edition is the inclusion of the German Kosmos logo on the front of these English language products.

  9. Die Siedler von Catan: Einsteiger-Variante - Kosmos 2009 (German) This custom promotional set for a German company was half way between a full sized set and the travel set. The game used smaller hexes with printed numbers on to speed the set up time. Some hexes formed part of the border so could not be changed at all while the remaining hexes were double sided with different numbers to create variation. The game does not have the plastic or wooden counters, instead using small printed cards with the image of the plastic counter on.

  10. Rockman.EXE Catan Magnetic Portable Board - Capcom2004 ( Japan) This is a small travel set based on the very collectible ROckmanEXE Catan artwork. Not as rare as the larger version this set still seems readily available online.
