As well as the Catan base game, over the years there have also been a number of Catan releases offering a simpler game or simpler set-up.
While these games look very similar to the base game they offer an easier game for new players. However the downside to these simpler games is that they are not compatible with the extensions and expansions of the proper base set.
One aspect of these non-compatible games I do like is the artwork. These sets, along with some other non-standard sets (eg Capcom) use bright colourful designs that appeal to me.
