The 1995 yellow Kosmos logo Catan box is often referred to as the first edition of Catan. It was the box on much of the early advertising and at Spiel in late 1995.

However for the official release in February 1995 a smaller initial run featured the red Franckh logo. This first run is thought to have been around 5,000 copies, but may have even been as low as 3,000 copies. A far cry from the more than 45 million copies sold in the following 30 years.
