Catan promotional copies customised for various clients are some of the most collectible Catan sets out there. The 1997 Das Wasser des Lebens (Water of Life) and the 2000 Communication in Catan are both in the list of rarest items to find and acquire.

However, before both of these early commercial sets there was an even earlier commercially sponsored version released. While not as rare and certainly not as customised, the 1996 Catan: Panasonic Edition holds the record as the first ever version of Catan modified for a corporate client. Admitedly the modifications were minor - it was really just the base game with a series of overprints.

Below are some images from one of the copies in my collection. As well as this open set, I also have a sealed copy and a sealed Klaus Teuber autographed copy. Sadly I am not aware of the number of copies or how the Panasonic came about and there is no reference to this release in either of the two non-fiction books by Klaus Teuber.

NB: I do have a 1995 set that is before the Panasonic set, but I do not class it as modified for a commercial client. The 1995 box simply has a sticker on the front with the Iglo logo and reads "Vivactiv Natürlicher Schutz". There are no modifications to the box or components.
